Dazaifu Tenmangu Torii
About This Gate
One of Japan's most important Tenjin shrines, dedicated to the god of learning. The bridge torii (taikobashi) creates a unique composition — you must cross a red arched bridge before passing through the gate.
History
Dazaifu Tenmangu was built in 919 AD over the grave of Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar and politician who was deified as Tenman-Tenjin, the god of learning. The taikobashi (arched bridge) represents the boundary between the secular world and the sacred realm. The shrine is one of the most visited in Japan, especially by students praying for exam success.
Symbolism
The bridge-torii combination creates a layered threshold — you cross the bridge (symbolizing a journey) before passing through the gate (symbolizing purification). The 6,000 plum trees were Michizane's favorite, and their February bloom coincides with exam season.

Getting There
Take the Nishitetsu Dazaifu Line to Dazaifu Station. The shrine entrance is a 5-minute walk from the station, past traditional shops and restaurants.
