About This Gate
A simple wooden torii at the entrance to Kamikochi alpine valley — the only access is by bus or foot. No private vehicles allowed. The gate marks the transition from modern Japan to a landscape unchanged for millennia.
History
Kuzuryu Shrine is located in Kamikochi, a highland valley in the Northern Japan Alps that has been preserved in its natural state. The area was designated as a national park in 1934. The restriction on private vehicles (in place since the 1970s) preserves the pristine environment. The torii marks the beginning of the trail system that leads deep into the mountains.
Symbolism
The simple wooden torii represents the Shinto ideal of harmony with nature. Its modest scale contrasts with the grandeur of the surrounding mountains, emphasizing humanity's small place in the natural world. The gate marks a literal and symbolic transition from the modern world to an ancient landscape.

Getting There
Take the Alpico Kotsu bus from Matsumoto or Shinshimashima Station to Kamikochi Bus Terminal (about 1.5 hours). Private vehicles are not permitted. The torii is a 5-minute walk from the bus terminal.
