About This Gate
A torii standing in Lake Biwa — Japan's largest lake. The view of the gate with the Hira Mountains behind at sunrise is considered one of the most beautiful in Japan. The shrine itself dates to the 7th century.
History
Shirahige Shrine was founded in the 7th century, making it one of the oldest shrines in the Lake Biwa region. The torii was placed in the lake to honor the water deities. The shrine is dedicated to Sarutahiko Okami, a deity of guidance and safe passage. The sunrise view has been celebrated in Japanese poetry for centuries.
Symbolism

Getting There
Take the JR Kosei Line to Omi-Takashima Station, then a taxi (10 minutes) or bus to the shrine. For sunrise photos, arrange transportation in advance as public transport is limited at dawn.
