Ise Grand Shrine is the most sacred shrine in Shinto, dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, the sun goddess. The shrine has been completely rebuilt every 20 years since 690 AD in a practice called Shikinen Sengu.

Architecture

The architecture follows the ancient Yuitsu Shinmei Zukuri style, believed to predate Buddhist influence. The buildings are made of Japanese cypress with thatched roofs.

Cultural Significance

Ise Jingu sits at the absolute center of Shinto belief. The Shikinen Sengu ensures that traditional building techniques are preserved and passed down through generations.

Torii Gates

The Uji Bridge serves the same symbolic function as the entrance to the sacred realm. The Inner Sanctum is enclosed by multiple fences.

Etiquette

Photography is prohibited in the Inner Sanctum area. Purify your hands and mouth at the temizuya before approaching. Walk on the left side of the paths.
