About

Izumo Taisha is one of Japan's most ancient and important shrines, with origins predating recorded history. The main hall (honden) is the tallest shrine building in Japan at 24 meters.

Architecture

The main hall follows the Taisha-zukuri style, considered the oldest form of shrine architecture in Japan. The massive scale of the building has puzzled historians.

Cultural Significance

Izumo Taisha is central to Japanese creation mythology. In November (Kamiari month), all 8 million Japanese deities are believed to gather at Izumo.

Torii Gates

The grand torii at the entrance was built in 1996 using traditional nail-free joinery. At 23 meters, it is one of the tallest torii in Japan.

Etiquette

Bow twice, clap four times (instead of the usual two), then bow once more — this unique practice is specific to Izumo.
