Kamakura Hachimangu

About

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is the largest and most important shrine in Kamakura, founded in 1063. The shrine combines Shinto and Buddhist elements and is surrounded by beautiful gardens.

Architecture

The main hall (honden) follows the Hachiman-zukuri style, characterized by twin gabled roofs. The shrine stands at the top of a long approach path with multiple torii.

Cultural Significance

Hachimangu was the patron shrine of the Minamoto samurai clan and the spiritual center of the Kamakura shogunate. The Yabusame (mounted archery) ceremony held in September is one of Japan's most spectacular traditional events.

Torii Gates

Three large torii mark the approach from the bottom of Wakamiya Oji avenue. Additional torii appear throughout the shrine grounds.

Etiquette

The main approach path is long — wear comfortable shoes. The Yabusame ceremony requires advance planning as it draws large crowds.
