Kumano Hongu Taisha

Kumano Hongu Taisha is one of the three Kumano shrines and the head shrine of over 3,000 Kumano shrines nationwide. The massive Otorii is the tallest torii in Japan at 33.9 meters.

Architecture

The main hall combines Shinto and Buddhist architectural elements (shinbutsu-shugo), reflecting the syncretic nature of Kumano worship.

Cultural Significance

The Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The syncretic deity Kumano Gongen represents the fusion of Shinto kami and Buddhist buddhas.

Torii Gates

The Otorii (Grand Torii) stands 33.9 meters tall in a field near the shrine. Built in 2000 of steel with a copper roof, it is the tallest torii in Japan.

Etiquette

The shrine is a destination for pilgrims — approach with reverence. The Otorii is a 10-minute walk from the main shrine.
