Nikko Toshogu

About

Nikko Toshogu is the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, and is one of Japan's most ornate shrines. UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring over 5,000 carvings.

Architecture

Toshogu represents the flamboyant Gongen-zukuri style, characterized by elaborate carvings, gold leaf, and painted decorations. The Yomeimon Gate alone contains over 500 carvings.

Cultural Significance

Toshogu was intended to demonstrate the wealth and power of the Tokugawa shogunate. The famous sleeping cat carving (Nemuri-neko) symbolizes peace.

Torii Gates

The stone torii at the entrance (Ishidorii) is one of the oldest elements. The inner torii (Omotemon) is a massive wooden structure.

Etiquette

Photography is restricted inside some buildings. The climb to the inner shrine involves many steps — wear comfortable shoes.
