Suwa Taisha

Suwa Taisha is one of Japan's oldest shrines, with origins lost in prehistory. Uniquely, the shrine has no main hall (honden) — worship is directed at Mount Moriya behind the shrine.

Architecture

The absence of a honden is the defining architectural feature. Instead, the shrine has a hei-haiden (a combined worship hall and offering hall).

Cultural Significance

Suwa Taisha represents an ancient form of Shinto worship centered on natural features rather than buildings. The Onbashira Festival, held every six years, is one of Japan's most dangerous and spectacular festivals.

Torii Gates

Traditional wooden torii mark the entrances to each of the four complexes.

Etiquette

Worship is directed toward the mountain, not a building. Be respectful during ceremonies.
